Away Days IPA blends our approach to English balance brewed to Northwest expectations. This is our third flagship beer and it is now pouring at our SE Portland brewery and taproom. Add this stop to your Portland brewery tour, you will be happy you did!
Northwest meets England in the approach and balance of this IPA. Using new English varietals of hops we employ modern IPA brewing techniques to create a unique beer. 100% English pale malt lays a balanced foundation of sweet, nutty malts to showcase UK Jester and Olicana hops. Enormous amounts of both Jester and Olicana are used late in the kettle to create bright tropical notes of lychee, passionfruit, and mango.
History:
Accounts of its origins vary, but most agree that what became later known as IPA was pale ale prepared for shipment to India in the late 1700s and early 1800s. George Hodgson of the Bow Brewery became well-known as an exporter of IPA during the early 1800s, and is the first name frequently mentioned with its popularity. As with all English beers with a long history, the popularity and formulation of the product changed over time.
*A dry-hopped beer is simple enough to define — hops are added to the beer-in-process post-boil, or on the “cold side,” when the liquid is in its primary or secondary fermentation phase. This allows the hops to impart all their wonderful aromas without leaving behind the bitterness you get when you boil them. Double dry hopping in our case means adding hops twice, during active and post fermentation, in large amounts to bring out huge, lush aromas.
